Coaches Rave About Perry Jones' Versatility

Jan 31, 2011 6:35 PM

Baylor's Perry Jones is a projected top-three pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.

"He's a very gifted young man with his size, length and athleticism," said OU coach Jeff Capel. "You match that with skill and he can hurt you in so many different ways.

"He can hurt you on the offensive glass. He can score with his back to the basket. He can face up or get it off the defensive board and push it himself. He can pass it. He can shoot it from 15 to 17 feet consistently and put it on the floor. That arsenal makes him very difficult to defend."

Over 35 scouts attended Baylor's game against Kansas in order to see how Jones would fare against an elite team.

"He's (nearly) 7 foot and can run and jump and put his head above the rim," KU coach Bill Self said after the game. "I'd say he's a pretty good prospect. He's maybe the best prospect in the country from a pure prospect standpoint. There's not a better athlete out there than Perry."

Wally Judge has left Kansas State's team.

“Wally quit the team today,” head coach Frank Martin said. “He’s not happy. I kinda saw it coming because of some of his emotional situations. He just has not been enjoying it.

"He told me today that he thinks it is time for a change.”

Judge averaged 5.5 points and 3.8 rebounds, missing five games earlier in the season for what Martin described as a personal issue.

Transfer Romero Osby Dominating Oklahoma Practices

Jan 28, 2011 1:11 AM

Oklahoma is struggling this season, but the team is encouraged by 6-8 junior transfer forward Romero Osby.

Osby has reportedly been dominating practices with the Sooners.

"By far the most talented player on our team," sophomore Andrew Fitzgerald said.

"Romero is very talented," said Capel. "Anyone who has seen our practices, within the first five minutes they talk about the difference he will make. And we feel very good about recruiting."

Oklahoma will also add Robert Goff, a highly touted Junior College All-American.

Texas Tops OSU On 10-Year Anniversary Of Tragic Plane Crash

Jan 27, 2011 8:21 AM

No. 8 Texas defeated Oklahoma State 61-46 on the 10-year anniversary of the plane crash that killed 10 people with ties to the Cowboys basketball program.

The game was in Stillwater.

"It's tough for both sides," Longhorns guard Dogus Balbay said. "The fans are going to come and they're going to be emotional. The Oklahoma State team is going to be emotional as well. For us, too, it's really tough, it's really sad."But the only way we could honor those people was coming here and playing hard."

Texas wore the same orange "Remember the 10" T-shirts as Oklahoma State during warmup.

"I wish we could have played better for those people and for all the people that took the time to come out for the tribute," OSU's Marshall Moses said. "But it had nothing to do with anything, other than the fact that Texas just beat us tonight in our home gym."

Families of eight of the 10 killed returned to Stillwater for the reunion, and former coach Eddie Sutton and three former players addressed the crowd at halftime.

"It doesn't seem like it's been 10 years, although there's some days that it does. That accident affected Oklahoma State University like nothing that ever happened before like that," Sutton said.

"It also affected everybody that had any emotional ties to any of those players."It changed our lives and it really changed my life. Those 10 guys were special. There wasn't a bad guy in that whole lot."

NCAA Grants Waivers To Aid Kansas' Robinson

Jan 26, 2011 5:27 PM

The NCAA has granted a number of waivers from its bylaws, clearing Kansas to aid sophomore forward Thomas Robinson and his 9-year-old sister Jayla after the tragic death of their 43-year-old mother Lisa Robinson.

Lisa Robinson was a single mother raising Jayla in Washington D.C. and had recently lost her parents when she passed away on Friday.

Kansas coach Bill Self said by phone Wednesday a cause of death hasn't been determined and won't be until results of an autopsy are released next month.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the NCAA said it offered its "deepest sympathies to Thomas Robinson following the tragic events of late in his family. To help support him and his younger sister during this difficult time, the NCAA and the University of Kansas have been working closely together to determine how best to assist during these next several days and beyond."

The deadline to enroll in classes is Tuesday, which has heightened speculation about Mitchell's status.

“No update at this time, no,” he said. “We’re just still hoping.”
